(Bible Basics) SINNERS, such an ugly term! To be called a sinner strikes to the core of our lives and borderlines as an insult. We like to think of ourselves as nice decent people. Certainly, most of us are not out there taking advantage of old ladies and robbing banks. We are not involved in drive by shootings or senseless violence! We are as good as the person who lives next door or works at the same office as we do. SINNERS! Isnt that the people who are on death row or the ones who are serving a life sentence in prison for some God awful crime on humanity? I am sure that it would not make anyones day to be confronted with the fact that everyone of us who live upon this planet are included into the group known as sinners. Lets be honest! We have all sinned. At one time or another we have all done things that we knew were wrong, shaded a truth, told a lie, took something that did not belong to us or had impure thoughts in our minds. Sin invades us all. First, What Is Sin? That is a Big Question. When many of us consider "What is sin?" we think of violations of the Ten Commandments. Even then, we tend to think of murder and adultery as "major" sins compared with lying, cursing, or idolatry. A poll carried out some time ago asked people what the term 'sin' meant to them. The average answer was, 'that which is wicked' or 'something which harms other people'. There did not appear to be any clear picture of sin. The truth is that sin, as defined in the Bible, means "to miss the mark." The mark, in this case, is the standard of perfection established by God and evidenced by Jesus. When viewed in this light, it is clear that we are all sinners. The Apostle Paul says in Romans 3:23: "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." The Bible defines sin in two ways, sins of commission and sins of omission. Sins of commission are acts of disobedience or rebellion against Gods stated standard or law. This may be evidenced by a willful act such as when Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit (Genesis 3:6). It may also be something as simple as stealing from your employer those few extra minutes taken on your lunch break or making copies at work without the permission of your boss. Sins of commission are acts or behavior that is in violation of what we know we should not do. However, we do it anyway. It is crossing a line or taking a privilege that is not ours to take. On the other hand, sins of omission are a failure to do what we know we ought to do. The Bible says, To know to do good but deciding not to do it, is sin (James4:17). If we know we should forgive someone for something they have done to us and we choose not to forgive, that choice becomes sin for us. It is a sin of omission! All sin is the breaking of God's law.The laws of God are written through the Commandments, into our conscience and revealed by Christ. When we sin, we offend God because it is His law that we have broken. The Bible plainly says all we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way (Isaiah 53:6). Romans 3:10 states, There is none righteous, no, not one. We have all sinned. None of us are without sin. The entire human race stands guilty before a holy God. Romans 5 12 tells us Therefore, just as through one man (Adam) sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned. The Bible says,If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives" (1 John 1:8-10). Thus, the dilemma is that all sinners are justly condemned before a righteous God. We will all stand before the Lord and give account of the deeds done in our body whether they are good or evil (Romans 14:12). The Bible teaches that we will appear before the judgment seat of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10). When that moment comes and we are standing before God none of us will be held account for the sins of others but for our own transgression. Jesus said that every idle word that men shall speak they shall give account of on the Day of Judgment (Matthew 12:36). There will be no escaping this appointed time! The word of God declares that it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment (Hebrews 9:27). Sin must be judged. According to the book of revelation all individuals who practice sin, or who have not been forgiven of their sins (on the merit of Jesus Christ taking the penalty for our sins) can not enter into Gods heaven and will stand before God in eternal judgment (Revelation 22:11:-15). Because God is a righteous and holy God, He must deal with sin. Sin must be judged! Scripture describes sin as a lot more serious than most people want to accept. It tells us that sin has permeated every aspect of our being - physically, spiritually, mentally and emotionally. Sins punishment is a physical and spiritual death. Physically, we are dying - a direct consequence of sin entering the world. Spiritually, we are already dead because of sin - and all of us would stay that way, if not for what Jesus did on the cross. Unless a person settles the issue of sin in their lives they will suffer what the Bible teaches as the second death or eternal damnation (Revelation 22:14). Jesus Christ was judged for our sins. Jesus Christ became the embodiment of Gods righteous judgment for all of mankind when he died upon the cross. He who knew no sin became sin for us that we may be made the righteousness of God in him (2 Corinthians 5:21). First Peter 2:24 states, He bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness. It is only because of what Jesus did, to save us from our sins, that we can escape the judgment and have the promise of everlasting life and a place in His heaven. When we become genuine followers of Jesus, we will still struggle with sin, because of all the habits and sinful inclinations we reinforced in our lives before we turned to Jesus. We will still have to face temptations, and make choices of whether to sin or to follow Jesus. But our ongoing lifestyle will be one characterized by repentance and by a willing desire to follow Jesus. We will begin to take a serious - in other words, an honest view of how terrible sin really is. Because of this, it will no longer be the desire of our heart to live a life characterized by the types of conduct that drove our Savior to the cross.
